Who’s Sylvie Simbi, the new gospel revelation From Rome? - Interview

Gospel music saw a surge in popularity last year, with new artistes bringing fresh perspectives to the genre. Among my latest discoveries is Sylvie Simbi, a talented singer-songwriter crafting her sound from Italy while hoping to connect with listeners in Kigali—and, if all goes well, bring her music to a live audience there.

The New Times caught up with her to learn more about her journey and vision.

Can you tell us about yourself? Where were you born? What led you to gospel music?

I’m Sylvie Simbi, a singer and songwriter born and raised in Rome, Italy, to Rwandan parents. Music has always been a part of me—whether singing in church, at school or listening to records at home. It’s been my passion for as long as I can remember, and I truly believe it was my calling.

In 2011, I had the incredible opportunity to feature in an Italian song that topped the pop charts, followed by a tour where I experienced the thrill of performing before massive crowds.

After that, I took a step back to focus on my education and professional career. I hold an MBA from Oklahoma Christian University, an MSc in Finance and Financial Law from SOAS University of London, a Master in Economic Security, Geopolitics, and Intelligence from the United Nations Association of Italy, and a BSc in International Economics, Management, and Finance from Bocconi University.

I’m also a qualified lawyer, admitted to practice in England and Wales, and currently work with international organisations.

My journey has taken me across cities like Milan, Kigali, London, and Paris, but now I’m back in Rome, continuing to share God’s love through music. Last year, I released my first gospel single, “I Worship Only You,” and now I’m excited to unveil “This Is Love,” marking a new chapter in my musical path.

Gospel music speaks to the soul—it’s more than melodies and harmonies; it carries messages of faith, resilience, and hope. I’m drawn to music with purpose, and gospel embodies that in such a powerful and authentic way. It’s not just something I sing—it’s something I live, and through it, I hope to uplift and inspire.

How would you describe your sound, and what influences have shaped it?

I don’t limit myself to one particular influence because music is all connected. Each genre offers something unique—whether rhythm, melody, or message—and that diversity has shaped my approach. My sound is a fusion of different musical styles, reflecting my multicultural background and creative expression.

Exploring various sounds allows me to connect with people in different ways. My previous single, “I Worship Only You,” is a heartfelt ballad—intimate, emotive, and centered on pure worship. In contrast, “This Is Love” carries an energetic rhythm, bringing a joyful, uplifting vibe that makes you want to move while still delivering a spiritual message.

What message do you hope to share as you embark on this journey?

At its core, my music is about sharing God’s love. Every lyric and melody is meant to reflect His grace, faithfulness, and the hope that carries us through life’s challenges. Music speaks beyond words, and I want people to feel encouraged and reminded that no matter what they’re going through, they’re never alone.

My music is also a reflection of my spiritual journey. If even one person feels uplifted or strengthened through my songs, then I know I’m fulfilling my purpose. Whether through a soulful ballad or an upbeat track, the message remains the same: God’s love is for everyone, and it has the power to heal, restore, and transform lives. That’s the heart of my music.

What challenges have you faced so far as a new gospel artist?

Being an independent artist comes with its challenges, especially when it comes to financing my music. Without the support of a major label, every step—from production to promotion—falls on me. While songwriting and singing are natural and cost nothing, reaching a wider audience requires significant investment.

The gospel itself is free, but sharing it with the world takes resources.

Still, I trust that God, who led me to this journey, will also bring the right people to support and collaborate with me along the way. If my music resonates with you and you’d like to be part of this vision, I warmly welcome your support. What can listeners expect from your first projects, and what are your hopes for the future?

Listeners can expect music that is authentic, heartfelt, and rooted in the Word of God. Every lyric is drawn from personal experiences, reflections, and a deep desire to connect with people on a spiritual level.

Looking ahead, I hope to grow—not just as an artist, but as a vessel of faith, reaching hearts across cultures and generations. No matter where this journey takes me, my focus remains on purpose and impact. If my songs can bring light to someone’s darkest moments, then I know I am walking in my calling.

One of my biggest dreams is to hold a concert in Rwanda—my motherland. It would be more than just a performance; it would be a homecoming, a celebration of culture, and a way to give back to the place that shaped my roots.
